Last year Paul Marley, a housemaster at Eton college, Berkshire, set up a 20,000 night -vision surveillance camera to catch smokers. Using a console in his study, he was able to zoom in and admonish them by loudspeakers.

A device to detect pupils who smoke is being used by schools. The pupils blow into a mouthpiece and the machine measures carbon monoxide in the breath. smokers show higher levels of the gas. Even
a few drags of a shared cigarette are detectable. Unlike teachers and parents, the machine cannot be fooled by sucking mints.
